Backfill & Compaction

Secure the base. Protect the install. Compact with precision.

Backfilling and compaction are vital steps in our underground utility installation process, ensuring that every pipe and conduit is safely supported and protected for the long term. At Lonestar Construction, we don’t just cover up our work—we reinforce it. Proper backfill materials are carefully placed around each utility line to cushion and stabilize them, preventing movement, cracking, or collapse under surface loads.

Compaction is equally critical, as it eliminates air pockets and strengthens the soil structure around the installation. By compacting in layers, we reduce the risk of future settling, surface failure, and damage to finished surfaces like roads or foundations. Our meticulous approach to backfilling and compaction not only safeguards the utilities but also strengthens the entire development from the ground up.

Our Process

Inspect Utility Installation

Verify all utilities are properly placed, tested, and approved before starting backfill.

Place Initial Bedding

Add a protective layer of fine material (like sand or gravel) beneath and around the utility lines.

Set Utility Lines

Ensure all pipes and conduits are stable, correctly aligned, and supported in the bedding material.

Begin Layered Backfill

Place select backfill in controlled lifts (typically 6–12 inches) over the bedding.

Compact Each Layer

Use mechanical compaction equipment to densify each layer to required soil specifications.

Final Surface Grading

Complete backfilling, shape the site to proper grade, and prepare for paving or final surface work.
